Half-Eye & Half-Moon Reading Glasses: A Practical Guide

Half-eye and half-moon reading glasses are designed to sit lower on the nose than a conventional full-frame pair. This allows you to look down through the lenses for reading, while still being able to look over the top when you need to see further away.
Our B-DCHR is a classic metal half-eye frame in a polished gold finish, designed to sit lower on the nose so you can easily look over the lenses when you need to.
Unlike most ready-made reading glasses, each pair is individually glazed at a UK optical laboratory with CR39 lenses in your chosen reading strength, giving you a higher-quality lens than those typically fitted to mass-produced readers.
The terms half-eye, half-moon and sometimes demi-lune are often used for similar styles. The exact shape varies, but the principle is much the same: a shallower frame designed specifically for close work.
Why Choose Half-Eye Reading Glasses?
Their main advantage is convenience. If you frequently switch between reading and looking across a room, a half-eye style can be useful because you do not necessarily need to keep taking your glasses on and off.
They are particularly popular with people who read, work at a desk, use a till, follow music or paperwork, or simply prefer the traditional half-eye shape.
Half-Eye, Half-Moon and Demi-Lune
There is no single rigid definition separating these terms.
Half-eye is a broad description for shallow reading glasses designed to sit lower on the nose. Half-moon usually refers to a more curved, crescent-shaped version of that idea. Demi-lune is the French term for “half-moon” and is sometimes used for the same style.
In practice, retailers and manufacturers do not always use the terminology consistently, so the frame shape itself is often more useful than the name.
Plastic and Metal Half-Eye Frames
Half-eye reading glasses are available in both plastic and metal designs.
Plastic styles can have a softer, more casual appearance and often use integral nose pads. Metal half-eye frames tend to look finer and more traditional and are usually fitted with adjustable nose pads.
Neither is inherently better; it mainly comes down to the look, fit and feel you prefer.
Ready-to-Wear or Glazed to Order?
Some half-eye reading glasses are supplied ready-to-wear in standard reading strengths.
Others are professionally glazed at a UK optical laboratory. In our range, this varies by frame, so the individual product page will explain whether the glasses are ready from stock or glazed separately.

Most ready-made reading glasses are designed around an average adult fit, but frame proportions do vary.

Are Half-Eye Glasses Right for You?
They are most useful if you mainly need glasses for reading or other close work and like being able to look over the top of the lenses.
If you prefer to keep your glasses on continuously and look through the lenses for both near and distance vision, a conventional full-frame style may be more suitable.
